I am using the free Norton Security Suite provided through Comcast. I am unable to ping other computers on my network. I have found if I disable the "smart firewall" I can ping but when it is on I can't.
If you are able to access the remote computer over the site to site VPN by IP address and can't access the same computer by host name, it means your DNS server is not able to resolve the domain name and/or host name of the remote computer. And you have to use the correct DNS server address in your network interface settings. ICMP/Ping and shared drives have different access rules and settings on a host. By testing ICMP/Ping and getting a response from the host, you're only verifying the computer is responding to network calls (through the ICMP protocol). Now check your shared folder settings since these might not be setup properly.
